Ensono
Overview
Ensono provides complex managed hosting and cloud infrastructure services to mid-sized enterprises with annual IT budgets of up to $100M. The Company specializes in supporting mission-critical workloads and helping clients manage and migrate between all systems. Ensono’s integrated array of solutions includes the hosting of client server, mainframe and cloud computing workloads, as well as database, storage and managed network services. Ensono has historically differentiated itself through its expertise in mainframe services. Today, the Company and its approximately 2,400+ employees host 200+ enterprise customers out of its eighteen data centers in the US and Europe.
Thesis
We believed that custom, mission-critical enterprise applications needed to be migrated out of legacy corporate data centers but could not easily be migrated to public cloud environments. Ensono was created to address this demand by providing a full spectrum of managed infrastructure and application services.
Investment
M|C and Charlesbank partnered to create Ensono by carving out the distressed managed mainframe and infrastructure business of Axiom. We recruited a team that had led a similar turnaround of an enterprise-focused managed infrastructure provider.
Value Add
M|C recruited the team and worked closely with them during due diligence to build a realistic plan to turn around a declining business and build a product set that could meet evolving enterprise demands. We subsequently supported 3 additional add-on acquisitions including the global data center assets of Wipro.
Outcome
M|C and Charlesbank sold the business to KKR in 2020, having more than tripled the size of the business by building a global sales team, improving service delivery and expanding the product set to address a wider range of enterprise demands.
